Long ago, Spices from Persia and the East Indies occupied the minds of the great civilizations of China, Greece and Rome. Longevity, health, fitness were the hallmarks of human interaction in classical worlds, much as they are in ours today. Health and physical fitness are not just a result of athletic workouts and vitamin pills. These help, but our basic physical health is determined by our diet. We all know the basic about nutrition and we do our best to eat well, but often we are at a loss when in comes to a well prescribed diet that could prevent a lot of the irritating minor illnesses and problems we have. In Thailand, people have always paid close attention to the little things in diet. This is why Thai food is filled with spices, herbs, fruits and vegetables such as chillis, garlic, ginger and coconut. These ingredients and others like them are more than just good taste, and traditional Thai cooking has always involved more practical knowledge of healthful foods than either decoration or flavor. Interestingly, medical professionals the world over are taking a closer look at the properties of basic herbal ingredients and finding that there is indeed some benefit to them. On this page, we offer a brief sketch of some of the most common human ailments and irritations along with lists of Thai fruits, vegetables, hers and spices that are known to have a potentially helpful effect on us when we eat them.
